Papworth Hospital
Cambridge, UK
Papworth Hospital is the UK’s largest translational medicine and specialist cardiothoracic hospital and its main heart and lung transplant centre. Through its new hospital, the Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust aims to provide cutting-edge facilities that match its world-renowned medical care.
The new Papworth Hospital consists of 310 single patient rooms, a 46-bed critical care area with recovery unit and high dependency unit and seven state-of-the-art theatres. Skanska, the appointed contractors, used the latest building information modelling (BIM) technology to maximise energy efficiency and ensure the hospital offers long-term flexibility.
MJ Medical worked alongside Skanska and HOK, the lead medical planner and equipment planner. As part of the medical equipment planning process, we developed an Equipment Design Impact Matrix (EDIM) and equipment specifications to ensure the design team had the full technical appraisal and design criteria for all items of equipment and, in particular, the specialist translational medicine technologies.
