Our history

MJ Medical started life with just one healthcare planner. Over the past 30 years, the company has grown become a strong team of healthcare planning and design consultants, drawing on global experience spanning 75 countries and 300 varied projects.  Here are just a few of the highlights:

MJ Medical

Brian Hobbs wins equipment planning and management contract for Al Mouwasat Hospital in Saudi Arabia.

1988
MJ Medical

Brian Hobbs, Cathryn Dart, Martin Malone & James Pearson found Martin James Medical, a business exporting medical equipment to Africa and the Middle East and consulting on hospital design and building projects in Saudi Arabia.

1989
MJ Medical

MJ Medical support Armenia aid effort, supplying emergency medical equipment, following the Spitak Earthquake.

1990
MJ Medical

MJ Medical wins first World Bank International Competitive Bidding tender, supplying hospital bed castor cups to South Sudan.

1993
MJ Medical

Brian Hobbs and Cathryn Dart take full ownership of MJ Medical operating the small business out of their home, a converted barn in Cornwall.

1995
MJ Medical

MJ Medical shifts business focus to aid funded healthcare projects in developing countries in Africa, including Botswana, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.

2000
MJ Medical

MJ Medical works on its first PFI project, Royal Gloucester Infirmary. Role includes production of room data sheets, stakeholder engagement, medical equipment transfer and procurement management.

2004
MJ Medical

MJ Medical develops Equipment Design Impact Matrix (EDIM), changing the way equipment design implications are captured and communicated within the sector’s design and build process.

2006
MJ Medical

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust appoints MJ Medical to help develop the outlined business case and PFI documentation for their new hospital.

2008
MJ Medical

United Nations Development Programme appoints MJ Medical to support global healthcare projects programme.

2010
MJ Medical

MJ Medical buys St Piran House offices in Truro to accommodate an expanding team responsible for delivering a growing breadth of services. This included Healthcare Service Planning, providing services such as demand and capacity analysis and model of care development.

2013
MJ Medical

MJ Medical model activity and develop design brief for UCLH NHS Foundation Trust estate project, which features one of the UK’s first Proton Beam Therapy units.

2014
MJ Medical

MJ Medical works on clinical design of new Mercy Ships.

2016
MJ Medical

Ashmore Group appoints MJ Medical as the lead health planning adviser for King’s College Hospital Dubai.

2018
MJ Medical

MJ Medical celebrates its 30 year anniversary.

MJ Medical launch design services, offering an integrated healthcare planning and design approach that adds value at the very earliest stages of a healthcare facility project.
